Rosamond Bernier

At 16, I played the harp in the Philadelphia Orchestra as part of a Youth Concert Series.
VOGUE sent me to Paris in 1947 — the beginning of a long relationship with the magazine. At first I covered the couture scene reawakening after the war. This photograph by Horst documents the visit of Gertrude Stein, with her poodle Basket, to the Pierre Balmain Salon. VOGUE's dessinateur Eric and I are in the background .
By 1954, I was planning my own art review, L'OEIL. For an early issue of the magazine, Miró agreed to show me his Barcelona. Here we are in Gaudí Park, photographed by Brassai. I am wearing a Schiaparelli dress.
Picasso reading L'OEIL with his wife Jacqueline looking over his shoulder, 1957, snapped by Roland Penrose. Picasso gave me permission to use this for publicity.

When I returned from Paris to New York, I began a career as an art lecturer. Here I am talking about Henry Moore in 1972 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where I was to give over 200 lectures. I still wear this dress by Zandra Rhodes.
Long-time friend Leonard Bernstein showing me he was on time at the French Consulate in New York when I was made an Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (this was 1980 — the Légion d'Honneur came later, in 1999). John Russell was the photographer.
Coming down the steps at the Met with John after a reception they gave me in 1991. Bill Cunningham photographed us often over the years; this was a favorite Saint Laurent cape.
That same year, 1996, photographed in front of a 35 foot blowup of my 1948 Dior dress, chosen as the 'Poster Girl' for the Dior exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute. (I am wearing Chanel!)
